Hi everyone: Ever eaten Caribbean food? It's great -- at least here in Kingston at "The Caribbean" restaurant (259 Ontario St., Kingston (613) 542-1798). I'm no expert on Caribbean culture, but this restaurant seems to offer a mixture of Jamaican foods (Jerk Chicken, Jamaican Hot Patties, Fricasee of Chicken) as well as Trinidadian, which has a strong East-Indian influence (substantial number of Trinidadians are descended from East-Indian workers who immigrated in the 19th and early 20th centuries) offering such tasty treats as Beef, Chicken, or Vegetarian Roti (pastry shell filled with curried meats (or veggies in case of Vegetarian) and potatoes. After dinner, show up later on for an evening of dancing to Reggae and Ragga (Dancehall) music -- the place is faily quiet until 10:30pm or 11:00pm but then it starts to fill up with people. A word of warning: The music varies depending on the night. Monday seems to be geared toward "Industrial" and "Acid Punk", I'm not sure about Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday is a "Hip Hop" night with $1 drafts, and Friday & Saturday night are for Reggae. Here's a small sample of the menu: Specialty of the House - "Curried Goat". Cuts of goat cooked in various spices served with rice or rice and peas. "Creole Style Fricasee of Chicken". Cuts of chicken marinated and cooked in spices. Served with rice and peas or seasoned rice. "Jerk Chicken". An original Jamaican. Hot & Spicy, smoked, served with rice and cornbread. "Beef Roti". From the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Pastry shell filled with curried beef and potatoes. On the dessert side, try "Jamaica Rum Cake". Rum cake with a rum glaze, with your choice of ice cream, or whip cream. The menu offers many more selections which I have not listed here. If you enjoy Caribbean food and music, or simply like new experiences, check out the Caribbean restaurant/club. The food is great, prices are reasonable, several styles of music to please many, and apparently one of the cheapest places in town for beer (or so I'm told :-) ). Beer is $2.65 per bottle for those who are interested. +-----------------------------------------------+--------------------+ | Steve Frampton - frampton@vicuna.ocunix.on.ca | Steve Frampton | | I collect postcards!
