I think that's the best way to judge a university.  From an
economics-type standpoint, Carleton has the highest rate of return on
education.  Take this analogy: If a hockey team were formed with all
Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, etc (history's best players),
it wouldn't take much for the team to win the Stanley Cup-regardless
of the coaching.  Now you take a team made from the no-name players
and make them #1 -- that would say something about the coaching.
That is similar to what is done here at Carleton.  It isn't just a
measure like "hey look-we took all straight A students, and guess what? 
they still get straight A's --our university must be good!".  Carleton
did rank #1 in student improvement.

Carleton makes something good out of the students whose marks may not
have been so good prior to university.  

That is something to be proud of.
