If it is a multi-level market thing, it is a shame.
People should not have to depend on something like that to start a
business. UW itself is capable of providing the inertia to spawn spinoff
industries. Industries which allow NEW and ORIGINAL things to be created.
Not the selling of someone else's products.
UW has created Waterloo Maple Software and Watcom. And I heard that the
people that designed the QNX real-time OS were from Waterloo.
But did you know that SUN Microsystems was once affiliated with Stanford?
SUN stands for Stanford University Network.
Wolfram Research was started by Stephen Wolfram formerly at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (I think).
My question: Why are the Americans better at creating spin-offs? What are
we doing wrong? What are they doing right?
