What's the difference between kwnet.on.ca (eg. u36) and waterloo.on.ca (eg. tdkcs)?

That's a good question. I made my application through the appropriate committe, had to fend off almost having to register under the name "kitchener-waterloo" (arg!), and wound up with the waterloo name when everything was said and done. Waterloo was obtained since it's the next geographical division. (The next higher being "on" for ontario, and "ca" for canada.). I don't know what or how "kwnet" came to be, someone else will have to speak for them. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Tim Kuehn | TDK Consulting |(519)-888-0766| | | <>< | Services | timk@tdkcs.uucp timk@tdkcs.waterloo.on.ca| +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Which directly (and correctly) implies that only hosts within that
organization have a right to use that (registered) subdomain.
>waterloo.on.ca is a general geographic domain
...as is "kitchener.on.ca". We (at the .CA domain committee level)
did have a discussion on the validity of "kitchener-waterloo.on.ca",
and that _would_ be a legal subdomain as well, albeit for masochists
who enjoy typing more than necessary. There are no legal abbreviations
for these at this time, and hence they must be spelled out in full.
In summary, KW area organizations who only maintain offices within
one city may register under whichever is appropriate:
.waterloo.on.ca
.kitchener.on.ca
.kitchener-waterloo.on.ca
.cambridge.on.ca
.guelph.on.ca
If you have offices in various cities within the province, registration
under .on.ca is appropriate, and if you have offices
in multiple provinces, you would qualify for registration directly under
.CA. The salient question is "where do your customers go to find you?"
You may request .CA subdomain registration forms and information
from "registry@cs.toronto.edu".

The details aren't what I was looking for - I didn't know that there was anything other than waterloo.on.ca, and when kwnet.on.ca appeared, I wondered if it was the same or different or what. Who "owns" kwnet.on.ca? Who are its members? >>waterloo.on.ca is a general geographic domain >[...]
