I got a call last Friday from Telebit saying that Profit Courier would
be contacting me the week of July 6 to arrange the modem swap. Looks
like they finally found someone in Canada to co-ordinate the upgrade.

I received the proverbial phone call earlier today, and I've expressed my distress on their decision pretty well as I will outline below. FLAME ON! I can't remember the last time I publicly derogated a company on the 'NET, but if ever there was a time, it's now. Unfortunately, from arduous past experience, Profit Freight hands off to a freight company called "LEP" in Canada. The name is easy enough to remember, as it reminds me of LEPper, in this case a company you definately do NOT want to find holding your goods. My first experience with LEP was back about '86 or '87 when I imported my very first 286 machine when they were brand new and hot on the market. I waited, and waited, and after about 2 months started to ask questions. This eventually led me to some company with an office at the (Toronto) airport called LEP. To their credit, once I found them, they did tell me that if I didn't pick up my freight _by_tommorrow_ it was going to be sold off as unclaimed goods. Hey, thanks for the notification! I spend the next day running to and around the airport, customs, banking machines, and finally managed to rescue my hardware at substantial expense. I was not amused. I slowly forgot about LEP over the years, but then the Telebit LPA deal happened. Ok, I gave TBit the extra $ for UPS shipping as they'd advertised and patiently awaited my T3000 arrivals. I waited, waited, waited, and after about a month and change (after my Visa bill arrived) called up Telebit and inquired. They checked, and they told me they shipped them via "Profit". TBit kindly supplied me with some phone #s in San Fransisco (I'm in Ontario, Canada). A number of toll calls resulted in another number somewhere near the US east coast to call, which provided me with a number in Mississauga - yup, you guessed it, for LEP. So, some more long-distance calls, but at least I'm closer to home. Unfortunately, LEP neglects to return calls, but after a few attempts, and some major nudging by Telebit personel, I did get a commitment that they'd deliver the modems "tommorrow". They showed up about 2 or three weeks after that, freight collect! So, we paid the double freight, received the modems, and are still waiting for Telebit's kind offer to issue a credit for the double shipping charges. It's only been about 6 months since they took my money and inflicted this cruel and unusual punishment on the unsuspecting, so I suppose some might think this reasonable. I'm now told that LEP will again have the opportunity to ream my sensibilities, patience, and wallet; that I will be forced to spend a day or more of major aggravation driving to an airport in another city, find out there is no where to park the car, that I need copious quantities of paperwork and will have to clear customs myself..... Oh, you want me to take the modems out of service for the day while I go tripping around the countryside instead of doing productive billable work. No, I'm not impressed. TELEBIT, PLEASE FIND A SENSIBLE WAY OF HANDLING THIS EXCHANGE IN CANADA. ***PLEASE*** IF YOU WANT EXTRA MONEY, PLEASE ASK, but deal with the distributors and couriers who know what they're doing and who _do_ give a hoot about customer service and satisfaction, not to mention their purported business. Telebit, we're not in the courier business, nor in the customs brokerage business, we just want to buy and enjoy your modems. Don't treat us like we're in Bangladesh or someplace off-planet. I _know_ you have viable alternatives; I've spoken with some of the people offering you sensible service. Give us a break! I wouldn't inflict LEP on you! FLAME OFF. I expect that I'll be following this up around about September or October. Please take this opportunity to prove me wrong. --ed -- Ed. A. If you want it faster, then go air-mail. There's no "brokerage charges" that UPS likes to impose (I've paid $18 or so for $0.75 of duty!), just the package and a customs invoice in the mail a week or so later. MUCH less painful, both on the mind and the pocketbook. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Tim Kuehn | TDK Consulting |(519)-888-0766| | | <>< | Services | timk@tdkcs.uucp timk@tdkcs.waterloo.on.ca| +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Telebit ignored and shipped UPS, I got hit with brokerage fees ($85) and I has refused to pay.
