Not really; I read {New West} sporadically when I was in high school,
but abandoned it long before it became {California}. They had some
wickedly funny parodies in the {New West} days. One of the funniest
skewered ponderous, simpleminded {Sunset} with faux article titles
like "Windows: let light in your house!" and "Doors: they open and
close!" and other painfully obvious stuff.
Does anybody else have fond memories of {New West}/{California}? Does
anybody remember why the name changed? And when did {California} go
belly up?
On a similar but happier note, I see that two other magazines that
richly deserved to vanish have done so: {L.A. Style}, and {Mondo
2000}. The former merged with some other archetecture/clothing-as-
pornography magazine. Their "we don't have to care how oversized we
are" attitude always grated; worse, it seemed to always appear in the
living rooms of immigrants from <unfavorite state here> who needed
remedial lessons on how to live in Los Angeles.
{Mondo 2000}, however, had the good grace to completely disappear from
the newsstands. Their prose style bordered on the hallucinogenic,
with a techno-poseur editorial stance. Articles by near-illiterate
pubescents sold as the "voice of the hackers"? Interviews with
irrelevancies like Diamanda Galas? Sheesh.
Neither will be missed.
