Just to be clear, I don't drive 50 miles just for a particular
restaurant or fast-food place. What I do is occasionally, about once a
month, is drive to Sunnyvale, where I meet at the house of an Intel
friend of mine from more than 30 years ago. This gang meets every
Thursday, usually travelling from only a few miles away. We meet,
debate various places to go, and then drive in one, or sometimes two,
cars. The places voted on can be as simple as a Hometown Buffet or as
fancy as a Max's Opera House (the Palo Alto branch). Occasionally we
have even drive the 40 miles north to San Francisco, to someplace in
Chinatown (whoops, I am no more allowed to say this than I am allowed
to say Blacktown or Nairobi) or to Cha-Cha-Cha, a great place in the
Haight-Ashbury district of SF. We have even drive as far north as
Sonoma, to rendezvous with another ex-Intel friend of ours.

A lot of miles to drive, but more of a social occasion.

Relevant to ba.food (don't know about la.eats) because I sometimes see
articles saying something like "I live in Sunnyvale and I really hate
having to drive several miles to Cupertino for good foo...does anybody
know of a good foo places close to Maude and Mathilda in Sunnyvale?"

Where I live, on a hill overlooking Monterey Bay, I have to drive 7
miles just to get to the nearest fast food place, and 15-18 miles to
get to Santa Cruz, so I have little sympathy for people trying to find
places closer than a 3-mile drive.

Yes, and remember that "once or twice a month" is likely only when one
lives relatively close. I do restaurants or fast food about once per
week, so I'd probably hit an Islands within 20 miles of me maybe once a
year. Which I'd like to do, so I hope they come to my area.

Speaking of my area, I can recommend Phil's Fish Market, in Moss
Landing, about halfway between Monterey and Santa Cruz, and Riva Fish
House, on the wharf in Santa Cruz, and Central Texas, a barbecue place
in Castroville, fairly close to the Moss Landing area. Lots of fast
food of various typical kinds, and some higher end places. Santa Cruz
County supposedly has 500 restaurants, close to a record in terms of
per capita. Most of them I have never tried, for reasons discussed
above.
