You're trying to make me jump through hoops, and I don't do hoops. Sorry, but the onus is on you to explain yourself satisfactorily, not on me to take up the slack by looking things up and trying to figure out what it is you're trying to say. : Trolling, however, is more specialized knowledge. > Almost everyone in Europe has more knowledge of fishing than the > average Joe in the USA. That's a rather sweeping statement. On what basis do you make it? Do you have comprehensive polling data for both populations? > What makes you think that trolling is better known in the USA? That isn't even what I said, let alone what I think. > On top of that, what makes you think that your knowledge of English > and the underlying causes of the anomalies of a language with only > three regular verbs, has anything to do with the evolution of the > usage of a computer term? You keep coming back to this "only three regular verbs" thing, and you keep failing to elaborate. What does it have to do with the matter at hand? What makes you think that I think my knowledge of English has anything to do with it? More to the point, why would you be inclined to believe that my knowledge of English isn't up to the task, what with my being a complete stranger and all? It seems to me that you don't have much basis for giving me the detriment of the doubt; it simply serves your purposes to do so, is all. Is _ad hominem_ all you have to offer by way of a rebuttal? At any rate, it seems we agree that posting provocative missives on Usenet in the hope of triggering emotional responses is known as "trolling." Since there's no verb form of "troll" in the mythical- being sense (like there is with "Jew," e.g., "Jew him down"), the obvious conclusion to be drawn is that the word in the context of Usenet alludes to a type of fishing: fishing for emotional responses, to be exact. Therefore, it logically follows that someone who trolls is a troller and not a troll. Q.E. effin' D.
