Unless you > come around with a shotgun (let me know in advance, I can give > you the code to my security door), we're here to *stay*. Yep, what he said. I first lived in SoCal in 1956, though I was too young to appreciate restaurants (though I liked what I understood later was Jack-in-the-Box, #2, not far from Balboa Avenue, above Mission Bay, in San Diego, of course.). And I used to hear about Anthony's, in La Jolla. After leaving in 1961, I returned to the Extended SoCal Megalopolis in 1970, to attend UCSB. I spend time in the LA area, as my sister used to work at the Troubador, and other places, and lived in Santa Monica (1977-88). And my brother has lived in the LA area continuously since 1977, mostly in Thousand Oaks, Westwood (UCLA), Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, and, for the past 8-9 years, Manhattan Beach. My parents lived at various times in the LA area, mostly near Thousand Oaks. So I visit LA a lot, and know the area. Possibly for years longer than Arne Adolfsen has know the area...not that this matters, as "length of time in an area" has never been a Usenet posting requirement. And, honestly, I don't see Arnie posting independent reviews or comments with even a fraction of the verve I see in the ba.food group. (I moved to the Silicon Valley in 1974, to join a small company, and have considered the Extended Bay Area my home ever since. Even so, I sometimes get people saying that "ba.food" is for San Francisco or maybe Sausalito or Berkeley posters, not for those living in the hinterlands of Santa Rosa or Vallejo or Sunnyvale or Santa Cruz.) Fact is, ba.food is for anyone who either lives in the roughly 130-mile north-south between Healdsburg and Monterey, and inland appropriately. Or for anyone who travesl to this area or has an interest in this area. Ditto for la.eats, from roughly Santa Barbara down to San Diego (even if they have have their own group, which they may) and inland to Palm Springs. And since I have eaten at, and commented on, various LA eateries including felafel places in Westwood, a Russian deli in downtown, various Cuban and Mexican and ribs places around the western area, and even chains like Islands (which generated a long thread, longer than most that Arnie Adolfsen has ever generated!), I am not at feeling guilty for being off-topic. Finally, many who regularly post in ba.food have spent time (their childhoods, their college years, later) in the LA area. We don't insult them for their LA backgrounds. So you, Arnie, should take a lesson from their playbook and stop insulting those you think are from some contaminated northern province. Though I sometimes kid around, and even insult, Meg, our loss in ba.food is your gain. She will contribute a lot more reviews of LA eateries than you, Arnie, ever do. --Tim May
