So I took them to a ribs place, "Central Texan," in Castroville (a town between Monterey and Santa Cruz, worth detouring over from 101 for). The proprietor is a dead ringer for Willy Nelson, so this probably added to the experience for them. Several of them had the "Combo Platter" (some other typical BBQ name, like "TrailBoss Platter," as I recall)...this is a huge amount of meat, and I could tell these Japanese visitors thought it was a great experience. Since they have steak in Japan, albeit not as commonly as here in the U.S., you might try taking them to a rib place instead. I don't know what the rib places are in LA (have just been to a few of them), but someplace like the Rib Crib would likely impress them. --Tim May
