I still have yet to really grasp >why durian is such a big deal in the Far East. Durian is really different from oniony/vinegary puffs. After, or rather while, suffering through a bout of (ObT:) "Norwalk-like" virus in San Diego this past Thanksgiving, I returned home to find that my roommate had not only cut open and eaten half a durian in the kitchen after I'd asked him not to, but had put the leftover bits (goo-covered seed pods or something) in the garbage, and had not wiped off the cutting board or the knife. The entire house reeked of what I'd characterize as "garbage", although "deliquescent carrion" might also be fair. My girlfriend tried durian in SE Asia, and basically said what everyone else has said, which is that it smells horrible but actually tastes pretty good. -- Joseph M.
