Interesting article with lots of pics in the NY Times
about taco joints from LA to the Gay Bay.

My fave joint, Lilly's in Santa Barbara gets a mention.

Hmmm, Tacqueria Vallarta on Pacific as well.

Yes, and about a dozen other places. Including one in Watsonville:

"This is Watsonville, an agricultural town, filled with taquerias
catering to the ever-increasing Hispanic population.
Fiesta Tepa-Sahuayo looks like a classic California hole-in-the-mall,
but the festive interior brims with homeland trinkets. The tacos hardly
disappoint, but my guess is that the real gems are the hard-to-find
specialties, like shrimps in rose petal sauce."

I've been to this place a few times. Even for lunch, the specialties
are a lot more exotic than mere tacos.

(No, JC, I will not give a street address. Google if you are
interested.)

I usually favor the taco stand that is literally a hole in th wall, the
walk-up ordering window on the street one street east of Main St., near
the park.

(One can enter a real door on that side, too, or enter from the shady,
glass-fronted side around the corner.

But there are so many tacquerias that no survey can do them justice. In
Santa Cruz alone, for example, I favor the tacqueria on Water Street,
across from the back entrance to the Subaru dealership.

The tacqueria down 41st Avenue, near Pleasure Point, is also good. It
may or may not be part of the Vallarta chain. Sort of pricey, though,
so the last few times I've been in I saw the price list on the big
board and opted for a Chinese meal for less money, nearby.

Unfortunately, some of these tacquerias have grossly inflated prices,
with nary anything available for less than a $7 plate deal.

I mainly patronize tacquerias that have the canonical "super burritos"
for under $4 or tacos for under $2.75 each. As soon as a "taco lunch"
starts costing $7-9, might as well have a sit-down Chinese lunch.

Yeah, I just skimmed the article to see if they mentioned Santa Cruz.

I used to go there all the time when I was working in Watsonville
multiple days during the week.

I've been in once for sit-down.

Tacos Moreno? My favorite for a long time was Costa Brava, down on
Seabright and Murray. Eventually they tore down the little
hole-in-the-wall place and built something with an actual interior
dining area. There's a Costa Brava tacqueria over on River Street as
well; weirdly, there's also a Java Junction over there, the original of
which is across the street at Seabright and Murray.

How 'bout El Lugarcito in King City. Kick-ass carnitas and carne asada
tacos.

I've never gotten rice served on a taco at Taqueria San Jose
in the Mission (or any of their other locations).

I suspect the NYT reviewer had a communications problem and
somehow requested rice on his taco.

Greetings,

Best tacos I ever tasted were out of a Truck near Western and
the Hollywood frwy. Who knew you'd find a little slice of
heaven in East Hollywood.
