Brophy Bros clam bar

They call themselves a clam bar, they are what I would
call an oyster bar.

Located upstairs in the Santa Barbara harbour, this place
is busy and noisy. There are tables and chairs on the narrow
balcony and inside. But for the best experience sit at the bar
outside, or stand at the bar window on the balcony.

There is a "kitchen" menu of fish, salads etc. But you
are there for the counter specialties, cooked for you in front of
you by the barman. He will mix your coctail, shuck your oysters
and boil your shrimp in a beer sauce.

By sitting at the bar, you look out over the harbour.
Definately the best seat in the house.

The staff behind the counter are men, most have worked
there around a decade. The clientelle is varied, local singles,
tourists and fishermen who step in from their boats. Everyone
seems to get along.

Open for lunch and dinner. This is a perfect lunch,
oysters, a bloody mary and some of their french fries and life
doesn't get much better.

They serve New Zealand green mussels, I know there are
locally harvested mussels, but right now they are out of season.

Mussels with the fernch fries and a glass of local white
wine and you could be scarfing "moule et frite" in a Normandy
fishing village - Except for the noise from the locals.

Brophy Bros. 119 Harbour Way, (The harbour) Santa
Barbara.

There's no "u" in harbor. (Or the street's name.)

Read a review on CitySearch. In typical fashion, the staff have it
listed as "kid friendly;" some of the reviewers apparently disagree. I
could see Daughter-units Alpha and Beta enjoying the different
offerings of food (now) but Spawn's still at that stage where anything
beyond the familiar or gahd-ferbid offering a glimmer of taste and she
starts to squirm. It might be worth it just to see her shocked
expressions as her older sisters pop oyster shooters, though.

Gosh-o-mighty, this sounds like a press release. Do you work for them,
doll? And what's with the British spelling of "harbor"? Eh, hon? And
why is this posted to ba.food? Are you/they expecting people to travel
down to Santa Barbara for craptacular food?

Hungry minds want to know.

I rarely travel to Santa Barbara. But I saved Julian's review for the
next time I visit. I found it useful and interesting. Unlike your
post.

Spot on, some of us get out of LA and like to know about good eats in other
areas, right?!
I get down to LA, up to Seattle, Portland, over to other places too, so just
ignore the person with blinders on who has a one track mind, complaining in
that stupid fashion he has...

Not the way you write it, but I labour under different
rules.

With the high level of noisak and looking at the
clientele, I would hardly call it kid friendly.

If you like Swans Oyster Depot in SF, you would love
Brophy's. A smilar menu, with the addition of tables and chairs
and a full bar. The bar staff in both places are hard working,
friendly and helpful.

They are open all day. Great for a lazy afternoon.

Umm...what? I go up to SF, Seattle, Vancouver BC, NYC, etc., a lot myself.
Plus I go to dozens of SoCal restaurants all the time. Why a Bay Area
restaurant review is posted to la.eats is beyond me.

Please explain.

I congratulate you for your many travels and travails. Brava.

My question is what "blinders" do you think I have on? And what makes you
think I have "a one track mind". I'll pass on your comment that I'm stupid, or
make stupid remarks; you are/do the same. But still, this was a press release
pretending to be a review.

Apparently not the way the city planners write it either but they
labor under the same rules as I.

Clientele doesn't bother me as much as noisak; I prefer something that
doesn't produce a level three migraine before I finish my meal. It
sounds like the place is Left Bank Loud?
