Wurlitzer Weekend IV
January 18-19-20, 2002
A drive yourself pipe organ lovers weekend get-a-way
sponsored by
Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society and Orange County Theatre Society
The theatre pipe organ was originally built to accompany silent movies.
They are quite different from church organs. Theatre organs sound
different, and they come with sound effects like car horns, sirens,
chimes, whistles, xylophone, harp, etc. Their heyday was about 1910 -
1930. Come hear them this weekend! Music of the 20'2, 30's, big band
music, Broadway musical and movie theme music (yesterday's and today's)
is often played on these instruments.
Wurlitzer Weekend IV starts off Friday at noon at the beautifully
restored Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles (www.laorpheum.com).
John Ledwon performs on the 3/14 Wurlitzer. He is one of the
featured organists at the El Capitan Theatre.
This theatre was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, and has wonderful
interior. It's like the movie palaces of old. It is located at
842 S. Broadway, between 8th and 9th Streets.
Rob Richards (featured organist at the El Capitan Theatre in
Hollywood) will play at the 3/16 Wurlitzer at the San Gabriel
Civic Auditorium on Friday night, 8pm on January 18.
This theatre is located at 320 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel.
Jim Riggs will play at the Bay Theatre in Seal Beach at the
4/54 Wurlitzer on Saturday, January 19 at 9:30 am. The Bay
Theatre has been featuring Jim Riggs, who plays silent movies
there weekly. 562-431-9988 for details.
This theatre is located at 340 Main Street, Seal Beach.
Saturday evening at 8pm, Donna Parker, Tom Hazleton and Jonas
Nordwall will play at Pasadena City College's Sexson Auditorium,
featuring the 4/23 Wurlitzer, as well as two Allen organs.
PCC is located at Colorado Blvd. at Hill in Pasadena.
Barry Baker will be performing at the beautifully restored
El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on the San Francisco Fox
4/37 Mighty Wurlitzer Sunday morning, 9:30 am on January 20.
The program is called "A Kaleidoscope of Hollywood Musical
Stylings, an eclectic musical journey from Fredric Chopin
to Fred and Ginger with a focus on the sounds of Hollywood"
This beautifully restored theatre is located at 6838 Hollywood
Blvd., across the street from Graumann's Chinese Theatre.
Disney has been showing the silent film version of
Peter Pan, accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer for the last
two years, see www.elcapitantickets.com for details.
Jack Bethards' Big Band will be playing at Plummer Auditorium
in Fullerton on Sunday afternoon, January 20, 3pm as part
of Wurlitzer Weekend IV. They will be playing with Lyn Larsen
at the console of the Mighty Wurlitzer. Last year,
Jack Bethards simulated radio commercials from the '40s.
This auditorium is located at the corner of Lemon and Chapman in
Fullerton.
Sunday night at 7:00 pm, Ron Rhode will play the 4/26
Wurlitzer at Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo
(www.otmh.org) as a benefit. Old Town Music Hall
regularly features old films, including silents. One of the
proprieters, Bill Coffman, died last December. Donations can
be sent to the theatre to keep it going, as Coffman would have
wanted. Coffman and the Old Town Music Hall started the ragtime
revival in California many years ago. The theatre is located
at 140 Richmond Street, between Imperial Blvd. and El Segundo
Blvd.
Tickets can be bought as part of the Los Angeles Theatre
Organ Society/Orange County Theatre Organ Society's
