When I was a teenager in California, I tried to get a job picking strawberries.
Nobody would hire me.

There was a serious employment problem in Seattle in the early 70's - Boeing, the
main employer - went from 105,000 workers to 37,000 workers in one year.  People
were just abandoning their homes.  At the same time, the orchards in the eastern
part of the state were crying about lack of workers, so I went with a bunch of
people to pick the harvest.  No one would hire any of us.

I think Americans would do it, if they were given the chance.  They would expect
minimum wage, though, and decent working conditions, so the price of fruit might
jump from $1.29 to 2.09, but I think people would accept that, if they know it means
decent wages for the farmworkers.
