A number of years ago, a Nova documentary entitled _We Know Where
You Live_ was broadcast over PBS. It described how direct marketers
operate, what kinds of information they seek, and how they go about
collecing it. Marketing research companies primarily seek
demographic info, from which they can develop lifestyle profiles
and maps that indicate by region who lives what lifestyle, which
they can then sell. Their largest resource: The US Census Bureau.
They also comb public records, and the reporter who researched and
narrated this documetary also indicated that many state DMVs sell
them registration records, which helps them to build their lifestyle
profiles.
