Back in the late 1959s when the civil rights movement was beginning,
Dick Gregory was still doing standup comedy. At a concert in Canada he
announced to the crowd about how blacks in the USA were standing up to
protest their treatment, and congratulated the audience for fine way
Canadians treated their black people. As the thunderous self-satisfied
applause died down, he added, ".... all twelve of them".
It's easy to be "tolerant" (a bad word, btw) when a minority is VERY
minority, and cannot in any way be perceived -- or misperceived -- as a
threat. In Boise do the black people get invited out on double dates?
Do they buddy around with white people? Or are they "tolerated"?
I'm not too sure I'd like being "tolerated". (Oh, sure, kid. Hang around
if you like. Just don't get in the way.)
I've lived in towns like Boise. Boooooooring. And not just because
they're small.
