I posted this query in the appropriate newsgroups for writers, playwrites, etc., and was surprised at (a) how few responses I received, and (b) how few leads were in those responses. Surely, there must be theatres and theatre groups dedicated to developing new plays -- and where better to look than LA and New York. I'm also posting in DC, since I live in this area. The short version: I am seeking a listing of theaters that will read and develop new plays. Or, if you know of a specific theater, please reply about that as well. I know that in screenwriting, there are competitions, and I'm looking for a similar listing for theatrical plays -- both competitions, and specific theaters that develop new works. Ideal locations would be New York, and LA, for obvious reasons, but also the Washington, DC metro area, since that is where I live. However, I am open to almost anyplace in the good 'ol USA. Background: Years ago I wrote a stage play, which received several readings, here in the DC area, through various development programs. I finally decided that that play needed more repair than I was willing to make (or at least, more than I had the time to make), and turned my attention to other matters. Now, I've just recently completed my second play -- hopefully having learned from the mistakes of the first one -- a full-length, two act, six character drama, which is (intended to be) funny along with being serious. I'm seeking any sort of development venue, including readings, simplified productions, and full productions. (For a full production, the production requirements are not too hard, but not quite trivial, either: A kitchen and living room set, chairs, tables, couches, stairs leading to a second floor landing, a few working doors, a fair number of fairly conventional props, etc. So, no, it's not Miss Saigon, with the helicopter landing, or Cats, with the kitty ascending to heaven; but a full production will require at least some set work.) Of course there are tons and tons of theaters, but I know that typically only a relative handful will look at new works. Between the time I did the last play, and this new one, the Internet has mushroomed, so I imagine there is probably some kind of online listing. The downside to the growth of the Internet is that a Google search returned thousands of listings, mostly for specific theaters, rather than a general list of relevent theaters. So, it would really help if someone could steer me to those sites -- I'm assuming they are out there -- which list development venues for new dramatic works. Thanks for all leads regarding theaters that might work with me to get my play out into the world.
