Its time. Bill Clinton, since you cannot save yourself, please save your party. Resign now. As you can see, more and more people are calling for Clinton to vacate the White House. Its time. Unlikely coalition seeks Clinton's resignation By Joyce Howard Price THE WASHINGTON TIMES Some are longtime Clinton supporters. Others are devoted defenders-turned-critics. And all have become the opposition, a growing lot from personalities as diverse as Gloria Allred and the Rev. Jerry Falwell to 37 congressional incumbents or candidates to newspapers across the nation. This unlikely collection of pundits and lawmakers, newsmakers and columnists, from the liberal to conservative, has voiced the same call: President Clinton should resign. "I'm making that call reluctantly, and I think I'm the first known feminist to make that call," said Miss Allred, a feminist lawyer in Los Angeles who describes herself as a longtime Clinton supporter and contributor. "I commend him for his overall record as president ... but his lying to the American people is not acceptable. ... He should resign," she said in a telephone interview Thursday. The National Journal Group Inc., which keeps track of resignation calls in the Hotline and on the Internet, even has former Rep. Patricia Schroeder, Colorado Democrat, on its list of 70 politicians, would-be politicians, pundits, and other celebrities who have urged Mr. Clinton to step down in the aftermath of his Aug. 17 televised speech, in which he acknowledged having an inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinsky. But in an interview Thursday, Mrs. Schroeder, now president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Publishers, said she's withholding judgment until she knows what Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr has in the report he'll be submitting to Congress. "I said I would resign [if I were Mr. Clinton], but obviously, he isn't going to listen to me," Mrs. Schroeder said. She added she "couldn't go out in public again," if she had confessed to the kind of behavior Mr. Clinton acknowledged. And she expressed pity for "our poor fiction writers," saying it will be impossible for them to top the real-life saga of Mr. Clinton's affair with a former White House intern only a few years older than his daughter. Initially, it was mostly only Republicans, pro-family leaders, and media organizations and pundits with a conservative bent that demanded Mr. Clinton step down. But now an ideological spectrum is represented on Hotline's growing list. In addition to known Clinton opponents such as Sen. John Ashcroft, Missouri Republican, and Gary Bauer, president of the Family Research Center, the Hotline list includes former liberal Republican congressman and television personality Fred Grandy; former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, a centrist Republican; and liberal pundits Bonnie Erbe of Scripps-Howard and Al Hunt of the Wall Street Journal. In a column Thursday, Mr. Hunt said the president's resignation would probably be the "best solution" to getting through the remaining months of his second term "with the least harm to the country and presidency." But the columnist acknowledged it 's unlikely the president will leave the White House of his own volition. The Hotline's "Resignation Watch" includes Democratic congressman Paul McHale of Pennsylvania, the only Democratic incumbent congressman so far to seek Mr. Clinton's ouster. Hotline also wrongly identifies Rep. Ralph M. Hall, Texas Democrat, as having called for Mr. Clinton's resignation. "I wouldn't lose any sleep over it [if he resigned], and 99 percent of my constituents are against the president," Mr. Hall said Thursday in a telephone interview. But he said he is not calling for the president to step down. "I think he's entitled to a fair hearing," the congressman said. But the Hotline list does not include former Sen. Sam Nunn, one-time chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who wrote in an op-ed piece published Sunday in The Washington Post saying the president may have to resign "to fulfill his oath ... and preserve and protect our nation." Nor does the list include Sen. Russell D. Feingold, Wisconsin Democrat, who told The Post that resignation is "one of a series of options that may be necessary" for Mr. Clinton to consider "if it's not possible to have the confidence of the American people." And Sen. Robert F. Bennett, Utah Republican, is not on the list, although he has stopped just short of urging Mr. Clinton to resign. Mr. Bennett has said Mr. Clinton's "credibility is damaged beyond repair," the senator's spokeswoman Mary Jane Colliprest said. Earlier this week, Americans for Democratic Action, the president's most loyal supporters, criticized him for a lapse "of serious judgment" but stopped short of calling for his impeachment. House Democratic Leader Richard A. Gephardt called the president's actions "reprehensible." Tim McCown, a Democratic candidate for Maryland's Sixth District congressional seat, is the only Democrat among 20 House and Senate candidates on the Hotline list who believes Mr. Clinton should resign. The Denver Post, The Washington Times, the Manchester Union Leader, the Orlando Sentinel, and the York [Pa.] Daily Record are among the daily newspapers that Hotline says want Mr. Clinton to resign. It also identifies several magazines-the National Review, Weekly Standard, and the Economist-as sharing that sentiment. Dennis Hetzel, editor and publisher of the 43,000-subscription York Daily Record, described that newspaper as being "moderately left-of-center." "We endorsed Clinton for president twice, and we were enthusiastic about him both times," Mr. Hetzel said in an interview. "I thought he was what this country needed." But given the "tone of Clinton's [speech] and the obvious deceit that went on at taxpayer expense, we crossed our last bridge with that guy," Mr. Hetzel said. Said the Denver Post in an editorial: "We have no reason left to hope that Clinton, in the seemingly interminable two years that lie ahead, can rally his resources to serve meaningfully in his high office or to lift the national pall of dismay and cynicism. The most honorable course remaining is resignation ... out of respect for the office, he should step down."
