Probably for the same reason that mine has to support churches.  Their
tax-free status means I have to pay more taxes.  Personally, I resent
that.  Some states have prohibited public funding of abortions.  I'd be
willing to support elimination of public funding for abortions if the
tax-free status of every church in this country is eliminated.  (I won't
hold my breath for that one, though.)
  
I wonder how many other medical proceedures governments have passed such
judgement on?  Not many, I'd guess.  I'd like to see The People be
allowed to choose for themselves in this free society.  Further, as a
man, I don't think I should have the power to compel or deny any woman
to do anything with her body.  (My dating history will bear that out!) 
Maybe the next time I can get pregnant, I'll change my mind.

Ya know, this issue has many decent arguments on both sides from very
sincere people.  This, sadly, is not one of them.  It is simple, stupid,
mindless hyperbole that does absolutely nothing to further legitimate
dialogue.

When was that ever suggested?  It wasn't.  Specious argument.

So you only follow the commandments, rules, laws (or whatever) that are
convenient to you?  Interesting commentary on faith and devotion.

They most certainly do.  Does an honest look at history scare you that
much?  Nine "Great Crusades" and millions of deaths all to FORCE people
to become Christians  (The vanquished who didn't agree to convert were
summarily executed.)  From my limited understanding of Jesus (a.k.a. The
Prince of Peace), that doesn't seem to jive with his teachings.  But I
don't claim to speak for either The Creator or for Jesus, nor do I trust
people who do.
