What will happen to single-family home neighborhoods, >> existing businesses, streets, freeways, etc.? Fewer people will be working at jobs requiring them to commute to work because there will be fewer businesses selling products. Why? As the population ages, they buy fewer things. Services will continue to increase, and most of those can be done by people who live closer to where they'll be providing the services. Example: a nurse would be able to find a job in a medical center or in home care much closer to home than a factory worker would be able to find a factory job. I don't think sprawl will continue. I think more people will move to smaller communities as they realize that the big cities won't have any more job draw than the smaller towns do. It's probably not any harder to get a bartending job in Alturas than it is in LA. Also, given the Web and the success of EBay, Amazon, and other selling sites, people who do make things will find they can make them anywhere that the infrastructure exists for their particular project. Detroit is an interesting example: They have hundreds if not thousands of blocks where there might be just 1 or two homes occupied. Detroit can no longer afford to provide police, fire, sewer, streetlighting, and other services to those areas, so what they're proposing is to mow down entire neighborhoods and turn them back into....farmland. I'm not sure how many people would want to farm Detroit, so what I predict is that those lands will simply revert to BLM-type management.
