How do you figure? Clinton was pretty moderate and tried to work with the
opposition. He was famous as a "triangulator". Unless you mean that every
wingnut in the country crawled out from under his rock when Clinton was
elected, which is true. The level of irrational Clinton hatred on the right
was (and still is!) mind-boggling. But I suspect any Democrat would have
been subject to the same treatment.

What's your point?

Except for computers, none of those things strike me as a luxury (and one
can even make an argument there given how important email and the web are
becoming in searching for work).

Certainly a car is not a luxury in California given our crappy mass transit.
It would be pretty tough to find and hold down a job and feed a family in
California without a car.

The others are not expensive items, even if bought new. And one usually
keeps these items for years.

The real issues for low-income families are how many months are they away
from homelessness if they can't make the rent, or what happens if they or
their children get sick. As much as they add to quality of life, having
some cheap electronic gizmos in the house aint gonna help in those cases.
