What will Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and other American cities look like in 20 years and what will be the primary form of transportation? What will happen to single-family home neighborhoods, existing businesses, streets, freeways, etc.?

As long as the major auto producers insist upon spilling out zillions of gas guzzling vehicles, don't expect any major changes soon. In the early fifties, we were told that in the mid sixties, we would have automated highways for long distance travel. Every ten years we get told there isn't enough fuel to last 30 years. Since the mid 70's the push has been to increase the mpg. It ain't happened yet has it? With some minor changes to a diesel engine, they can be made to run on pure unused veggie oil. Every home in the world could have it's own power source but that ain't gonna happen either as the big conglomerates would be put out of business. So don't be lookin for any major changes in the next 30 years at least.

The primary mode of transportation will be silent-running, elevated monorails, with the upper 20% of the population using flying cars. Freeways will be turned into public green spaces. Most people will live in high rise apartment buildings, but they'll get their Big Macs and Twinkies directly from their push-button food synthesizers. The streets will still be covered with gum people have spit out, dog shit and mentally ill homeless people verging on death. I can't wait.
