The Wild Web Weekend is an intensive, 2 day, learning seminar about
website development, web related software (server/browser/tools),
HTML page authoring, CGI bin services, Internet and related areas.
Overviews of WWW, URL, HTML, HTTP, MIME, CGI, TCP & SLIP will be
accompanied by in depth lessons in website design, page layout,
HTML, forms, images, imagemaps, CGI services, web server software
necessary to be a website developer, and how it all fits together.
Included will be overview coverage of VRML, Java, HotJava,
Netscape 2, and more.
Expect to come out of this seminar with knowledge on the process
of designing, writing, testing and updating a website from scratch.
You will be able to write HTML pages, design forms, specify CGI
inputs and outputs, downsize picture files, create imagemaps,
storyboard a website, test web pages, put up a website and update it.
---
Who should attend: Ambituous beginners to intermediate HTML authors
with a need or desire to do more than authoring HTML pages. You should
want to be able to design, create and maintain a website using a remote
development computer with a running web server.
Suggested Requirements: You have browsed the World Wide Web for at
least one month and have working knowledge of word processing or
desktop publishing.
The seminar will concentrate on the basic academic understanding of
applied webology for creating sites, thus there will be no review of
existing sites and no live connections, in favor of spending more time
on the fundamentals of web page authoring and forms/CGI development.
Lunch will not be provided. Bring a brown bag lunch or purchase locally.
Attendence limited to first 80 attendees.
Agenda
======
Saturday, November 11, 1995
---------------------------
9:15 AM - Registration and seating
10:00 AM - Introduction and Brief Internet/Web Overview
Announcements and overview of Internet giving the big picture of
the major pieces of Web and HTML. As a web developer one must
understand how the Web fits into Internet.
10:15 AM - HTML Basic and Intermediate Tags (2 hours)
Each basic tag will be briefly explained and the intermediate tags will
be covered in depth. Netscape tags will be covered. This short 2 hour
session will be reinforced by the design and layout sessions.
12:30 AM - Lunch Break - 30 minutes.
1:00 AM - SGML HTML DTD
Where did HTML come from? Standard Generalized Markup Language
is a Department of Defense (DoD) CALS initiative that has been
adopted in 1990 for web pages as HTML 1.0. HTML 2.0 provided
features to ease the authoring task, and HTML 3.0 provides for
better presentation.
1:30 PM - Tables: HTML 3 and Netscape
Tables are the hottest layout tool for web pages. They provide
multi-columns, imbedded pictures, alignment of graphics, and
many other features to enhance the appearance of the page.
2:00 PM - HTML Page Layout
Beyond text processing comes desktop publishing using pictures and
multiple columns. Now WWW introduces variable-width publishing
where the reader can control the fonts, sizes, and more.
Web page layout for good viewing with HTML 2 level and higher
capable browsers is more art than science. A few tips and tricks
on using HTML 3, Netscape and other vendor enhancement tags will
make your pages look good on any browser.
3:00 PM - CGI, Forms, Passwords, Searches, Databases
Common Gateway Interface is the HTML "programming." Plug and play
CGI script libraries are rapidly forming under the umbrella of
Web Development Tools at many sites. The easiest way to learn
CGI is to locally install an existing CGI command and get it working
on your computer. Then, modify it for your purposes. A URL laundry
list of websites for web developers will bootstrap you in this process.
4:00 PM - URLs, HTTP, Meta Commands
What is http://domain.name:port#/directoryalias/subdirectory/filename
all about? And more on other special effects using HTTP Meta commands
in your HTML pages.
4:30 PM - Open Session - Questions and Answers for 30 minutes.
Sunday, November 12, 1995
-------------------------
9:30 AM - Open doors for seating
10:00 AM - Future of the Web
Java is now a reality. 3D is done with HotJava and VRML.
Secured commercial transactions using credit cards, banking,
ordering and grocery shopping are now Web realities.
10:30 AM - Website Design
Good websites do not happen by accident. Design is critical
to timely implementation of an easy site to navigate.
Storyboarding of even a small site can be of immense benefit.
The storyboards show the "web" of hyperlinks between each page.
What extra buttons and pages make a good, easily navigated site?
11:00 AM - Website Developer Tools
HTML authoring is more like word processing than programming
especially with the newer HTML software tools that are "What
You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG)." The software for web
browsing and development are plentiful, too many to be review.
However, several standout and will be mentioned. HotDog and
WebWeaver are among the best of the HTML authoring tools.
Other tools are MapEdit, FTP, and many webpage "checker" sites.
Word and Word Perfect and many other word processors now have
HTML authoring or export modes. Conversion tools for SGML, TeX
and RTF abound.
12:00 Noon - Downsizing graphic images, sound and video files.
How does the web do graphics? Sound? Movies? The web supports
a limited subset of formats available today, but you can add your
own. Image formats are GIF, JPEG, and XBM. Which can be
downsized the most? What features are not support in JPEG?
What are indexed color palettes with 1 to 8 bits. Why use a
super palette?
Audio and video can be played. What are the formats and how
does one downsize them will be briefly covered.
12:30 AM - Lunch Break
1:00 AM - Overview of Internet and World Wide Web
What are the pieces of the Web/Internet a developer should be
aware of? How the Internet works will be demystified.
From the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet
designers, to WWW server/client(browser) software and how they
"talk" to each other. Topics will include modems, communication
software, TCP/IP, PPP/SLIP, ISDN, T1, T3, routers, ATM, networks,
Internet backbone, DNS, routing, saturation, HTTP, HTML, CGI, URL,
website versus web access accounts, FTP, and more.
2:00 PM - Website Provider Platforms and Server Software Issues
A website developer needs to run on their development computer a web
server software package. It needs to be configured for testing
imagemaps, forms, CGI services, and access privileges. Unix is the
primary platform for websites today. Cross platform development is
not easy, plus the differences between web serving software packages
are getting larger, not smaller in the rush to implement new features.
Must one develop on the same platform as the website? Usually, yes,
but I give some tips on how one can cross platform develop.
3:00 PM - Testing a Website Offline and Online
The process of authoring is followed by coping the HTML pages,
images, CGI scripts and other pieces to a new directory. In
the new directory hyperlinks may be broken. This copy operation
should be tested. Copying the pages to an online test directory
allows one to use a web pages "checker" site and test the links
before copying the pages to their final location.
4:00 PM - Moving the Website Online and Updating
How do your web pages go from your development computer to
your web site? FTP is the current rage. Telnet is helping
with online maintaince. Selecting a web site provider can
be perplexing with all the features, so what are the most
important ones?
5:00 PM - End of seminar weekend
