Not possible. Public Transit does not and should not exist in many of
the localities between S. Cal and the Bay Area; there are not enough
people (and users) for the service to be worthy in any way those areas
(i.e., no ridership-base).

Your only options are Greyhound, Amtrak, and flight (perhaps there
another long-distane travel carrier I'm missing).

Not only Greyhound. There is at least one other bus operator (whose
name escapes me) offering express bus service between L.A. and S.F.

I don't think you can get between L.A. and the bay area by continuous
public transit (and the Amtrak and Greyhound connections would not be
considered "commuter service"), but if you want to get pretty far north,
you can get from L.A. to Bishop (and on to Carson City, NV) by public
bus. You have to get to Lancaster first. From Lancaster, you catch
Kern Regional Transit to Mojave, then transfer to a different KRT bus to
Ridgecrest, where there is a connecting bus service operated by the
counties of the eastern Sierra to Bishop ("CREST" = Carson City
Ridgecrest Eastern Sierra Transit). At Bishop, you can continue on to
Carson City, NV, but I think it requires an overnight stay in Bishop.

The service between Mojave and Ridgecrest operates only three days a
week (Mon, Wed, Fri).

You could ride local transit south from Salinas to either Soledad or
King City. Then Greyhound to Paso Robles. Local transit to Pismo Beach
then Greyhound again to UCSB/Goleta and then local service to San
Diego.

I thik there is a summer service from Monterey to Big Sur that
connects with a bus to San Luis Obispo.

Mega Bus which runs cheap service is/will be moving all its equipment
to concentrate runs in the northeast area from Boston to Washington,
DC., in a month oor so.

I thought there was public transit gap somewhere between southern
Orange County and northern San Diego County.

That is incredible....Do you have any idea what the total fare would be each
way?

  Lancaster-Mojave is $2
Mojave-Ridgecrest is $4 (use trip 2 to connect to Bishop)
  Ridgecrest-Bishop is $20

TOTAL Lancaster-Bishop is $26

Metrolink will get you to Oceanside and Coaster will get you to SD...no gap.

Actually, then you might be able to make it to the Bay Area too, in the
summer.

The reason: once you get to Mammoth Lakes (via the Eastern Sierra
Transit Authority) you can transfer to the Yosemite Area Regional
Transportation System (YARTS) bus in the summer that will take you into
Yosemite Valley. And from Yosemite Valley you can take a YART bus into
Merced in the Central Valley.

So you'll need to find a public transit link from Merced into the Bay
Area (probably via Stockton, Manteca, or Tracy).

Here's a link to the YARTS web site:
