Commiserations.

I've done that a couple of times, but fortunately, always on my MS-DOS
and umsdos mounted partitions. I then reboot, and use undelete from
DOS. Yes, it's a kludge.

Three other things you can do, are:

o alias rm to "/bin/rm -i". This won't affect any of your shell
scripts, etc, because the alias is local to the interactive environment
of your shell. Sure, you'll get the prompt for every file, and you
won't feel quite so much like a power user, but it's insurance.

o There are hooks and toggles in the ext2 fs code for undeleting files.
They haven't been written yet, but don't let that stop you writing
   them.

o run the strings(1) command on /dev/hd?? to try and find where the
data is, and recover it that way. Alternatively, look at the ext2 with
Norton Utilities under DOS (launch with the /M maintenance switch), and
search for your data that way.

Hope this helps your otherwise precarious position.

Mitch.
