DEVELOPMENT OF THE GRAPHITE FIBER VIOLIN
                        Leonard K. John
                 Manager, Materials Technology
                      de Havilland, Inc.

For over three centuries very little change has been made to the art of violin
making. In 1979,the first major change was made by Leonard John when he
developed, built and patented the first ever graphite fiber violins,
with assured repeatable performance. The first public disclosure of the
graphite/epoxy violin was in Paris in 1980. Since then the violins have
been played by renowned artists, and have received excellent reviews from
the prestigious British stringed instrument journal "The Strad". The
graphite violins have been the subject of numerous radio and television shows
and the prototype is on permanent display at the Ontario Science Centre in
Toronto. The talk on the development of the graphite violin will cover the
advantages of using fiber reinforced composites and the excellent resistance
to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. Manufacturing
aspects will also be discussed, including the lower completion times when
compared to traditional methods of producing violins.

Leonard K. John has over 29 years of experience in the field of advanced
fiber reinforced composites applied to fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
His experience spans the first use of carbon fiber for helicopter primary
structures in the U.K. in the late 60's to present day commuter aircraft
applications. He has been principally responsible for the development of
DASH 7 and DASH 8 aircraft composite structures and has numerous publications.
In addition he teaches a continuing education course in advanced composites
at the University of Toronto. Len John has an Honours Bachelor of Science
degree in Mechanical Engineering from Middlesex Polytechnic, London, and a
Master of Engineering degree from the University of Toronto. He is a
Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a Chartered Engineer, UK.
He is the subject of biographical record in "Who's Who in Science and
Engineering" and "Who's Who in the World". Currently he is Manager, Materials
Technology at de Havilland, Inc.
