Send us the contents of your /var/log/XFree86.0.log Usually for this kind of error, it's 'fatal error: Screens found, but none with a usable configuration', which generally means something wrong with the selected resolution, or a driver problem. - Haioken "ray : )" <ytyg@ykuisgciu.com> wrote in message news:3ea08f48.8351238@news-server... > hi all > just set up deian r3.0 on an ip166 4 gig hd 32 meg ram > avance alg2302.a video card > > output says: > Warning process set to nice value 0 > instead of -10 as requested > > screen default screen [0] > monitor generic monitor > device generic video card > etc etc etc > i set the refresh rate 75 hz and colours to 24 bit > > i got screen blanking out on several occaisions during the tasksel > package setup.... > > any clues > thanks for any and all replies > > Ray <|:-)>

I've just set up Debian 3.0 ("Woody") on /dev/hdb7.
X wouldn't start for me either - something about "screens".
I recently installed Red Hat 8 on /dev/hdb5 and simply copied the Red
Hat configured X configuration file over to Debian on /dev/hdb7.
Miracles. It worked first time :-) :-)
I "gave up" on Linux sometime ago and am sampling distributions to
see if it's time to think about using it again.
I'm not suggesting you install Red Hat to obtain a "good"
configuration file but it appears that Red Hat does a far better job
at setting up X than Debian 3 (Woody).
