[debian] as86: which .deb file?

I'm trying to get hold of as86 so I can recompile the kernel
on this Debian 2.0 system. I'd rather get it from a .deb on my CDROM if
possible, rather than downloading a binary or source.

I started out with a 2.0.34 kernel then grabbed the kernel sources off my
old system's archives: patched it from 2.0.30 to 2.0.36 and tried
recompiling.. it complained about a missing 'as86'. When I linked 'as86'
to the preexisting 'as', it complained about it not supporting -O.

Any help gratefully accepted (and hopefully it'll come in handy to people
checking with Dejanews too).

It's in bin86.

There's usually a file called "Contents.gz" on most Debian CDs and FTP
sites which lists every file in a "full" debian system and where it
comes from.

bin86 is the deb, or binutils

for some reason dpkg doesnt have a suggests or a reccomends on this one
for kernel-source packages

Yup. I found it as bin86.

There were a few queries about the as and as86 thing (everyone seems to
try the soft link to as in the first instance.. odd) when I was searching
for answers. I'm curious as to why the divide is there. Do they each
provide functionality which the other doesn't? Why the duplication?

Having the suggests rule in the kernel source package probably wouldn't
have helped me much as my initial (pre-built) kernel was the standard
pre-compiled one from the CDROM install and the kernel source I'm using
to compile the new kernel is made from tarballs from www.kernel.org.

Anyhow, thanks for the help guys :).
