X wont start - newbie revisited

hi again i have discovered where the problem lies in the xfree86.0.log file there are several errors [WW] the directory "/usr/xh/fonts/cyrillic" does not exist entry deleted from path [WW] cannot open APM [EE] VGA (0) driver cant support depth 24 [EE] Screen[s] found but none have usable configuration obviously the[EE]'s are stopping the gui starting the avance alg2302.a video card is not recognised `and marked as probed i assume linux has dealt with the card correctly and the main problem is the colour depth which i foolishly set at 24 bit how do i find the file and edit that entry?? thanks again Ray <|:-)>

I'd suspect that this one above, is the problem.
Try looking for the modes section, looks a bit like this :
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Try setting the DefaultDepth entry to something lower like '8' ( 256 colours
) and try again.
You also might want to limit the resolutions to something quite low before
getting going..
