Hello group.

Ok, I'm new to linux, and I'm about to install Redhat 8.0.

I have purposely purchased and installed a second hard drive (80G).

I have read various posts that /,/home & something else should be
partitiioned (forgive my ignorance with directory names).

So before I install Redhat 8, what size partitions do I assign to what
directories (The whole 80G will be devoted to linux or could I effectively
half it)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Steven Taylor
Melbourne, Australia.

Ah partitioning. Controversy reigns here. Candidates for separate
partitions and why:

/home so you don't wipe out your user files next reinstall
/usr/local	ditto for user installed software

I suggest at least the above. Say 2G for /usr/local, 10G for / and the
rest to /home (for your stash of MP3s, etc, natch :-). The others below
are less applicable to you.

/var if you run a server and you don't want log and temp
		files to fill up /
/tmp ditto for temp files
/usr if you want to export /usr to other computers RO
/opt as for /usr
/boot for old BIOSes that can't boot from beyond cylinder 1024
you put this as the first partition on the boot disk

Following the recommendations of the RedHat 8.0 installer should do the
trick. It will probably default to separating '/' from '/boot' , only to
ensure that /boot ends up wholy contained near the start of the disc. /boot
will probably be very small, perhaps only 50MB. As well as those two, there
will most likely be a swap partition as well.

You can, if you want, subdivide the disc further. I find separating /home
from the rest convenient as it means that you can completely re-install the
OS, without trashing your precious data.

If you're only using a single disc, there is probably little to be gained by
dividing it any further than / , /boot and /home. I've gone crazy with the
partitioning before only to discover that some partitions fill up , while
others lay empty.

Welcome!
Before going into unknown territory it is good to have some adventures.
It is the price of "newbiness", you have to spent some time learning,
means making mistakes
and correcting them.

This IS Linux! Do whatever YOU think and want.
As this is your first it will be most confusing, subsequent installs
will be done with
more knowledge of your system usage and will be much more easier.
So for starters let the OS try (MS-Glassware fassion) what it thinks is
best for you.
And then have fun.
