Hi all,
I've notived that after I've made a sucessful connection to the net.
My /etc/HOSTNAME file is updated to contain the full ISP address of my
PC . I.e. slmel76p55.ozemail.com.au wiping out whatever was previously
in the file. This has the effect of causing some applications to go
looking for things on the web before my machine and also cause my base
directory to be changed from the current users to /usr/bin.
Any ideas ?
Regard,
Derek.

You have not told us what it is you use to connect. Redhat tends to do this if you have not given your machine a name. I would simply use a base script to launch ppp and get rid of the superfluous garbage that redhat, kppp, etc tend to clutter their scripts with. (eg see the samples in axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html)
