We have 2 Linux servers here with a Sony 4/8 DAT drive in one of them. The other server is mounted as an NFS volume. We use a backup program called KBackup. It's very powerful allowing you to include/exclude files and entire directories based on wildcards. It supports many formats, compression etc. Look out for it.
