Soundcard MediaVision PAS 16SL and Redhat 6.1 --Please help

Hi,

I am trying to get my soundcard working in Redhat 6.1.
It's a Media Vision PAS 16SL, supported quite early on so that's not the
problem.

I've run 'sndconfig' from a Virtual Terminal and it found the card and
tested it.
But the sound was really soft and there was some form of crackling.
I have a separate amplifier and speakers connected and the card worked
OK under w98.

When I had it set up in a Virtual console and went to X, the volume
controls in the gnome/enlightenment environment didn't work.
Even if I muted everything, no difference.
So the control of the card is not apparent to X.

What should I do?
Do I need to run sndconfig from X?

I'm a bit hesitant to do this, because after I had run 'sndconfig' in
the VC, the system was confused, and eventually slowed down.
So I don't want to stuff things up by running 'sndconfig' from an Xterm
window.

Has anyone any ideas?

Help would be much appreciated,

regards,

Luke
