ok, I got the source off the cd and installed the kernel source.
then I complied the kernel 2.2.12 like this................... (without
understanding most of the commands .. )
# su
# rm -f /usr/include/linux /usr/include/asm
# ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/linux /usr/include/linux
# ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/asm /usr/include/asm
# cd /usr/src
# tar -xvfz kernel.tgz /usr/src
# cd /usr/src/linux-2.2.12
# make xconfig (if you are working under X) selected EXIT when the GUI
came up
# make menuconfig or make config type make dep
# make clean
# make bzImage when you are using LILO , type make bzlilo instead off
make bzImage
here I got a error when I done make bzImage. I don't use lilo for
booting.
# make modules
# make modules_install
(I'm not shouting here.. :-) IGNORING THE ERROR WITH "MAKE BZIMAGE" AS I
DON'T KNOW IF
IT is important, what do I do now???????
apparently, I need to change the /etc/lilo.conf ??? what changes??
phew!
Thanks for any help ...

The documentation says to run ./configure, but I don't know if it matters.

As the documentation says:
cd /usr/src/linux
make config
Just accept the default choices.
If you do not have the kernel source installed, it should come along on
the distro. On Redhat you would do a 'rpm -ivh kernel-source-$VERSION',
depending on which version of the kernel comes along.
