If it is really due to a dead CMOS battery insode one of those DALLAS
12887 chips, you might also try the following (not tested by myself,
no warranty):
Open the DS12887's case using e.g. a hot soldering iron. Be very
careful. The chip is a hybrid one with the battery mounted upon it.
You now should be able to disconnect the battery from the chip. If you
leave the battery's pins connected to the chip you could solder two
wires onto them and connect these wires to an external battery pack
(3.6 Volts, observe correct polarity, of course). If you chose
rechargeable batteries you may also add a simple charger like this:
+5V (from computer's power supply)
o
| ____
+---|>|----|___|----> to the "+" clamp of the battery pack
Diode Resistor 200 - 470 Ohms
(any)
After these steps and successfully verifying that the chip is still
working you might now seal it again using epoxide based two component
glue or something similar. That may be necessary to avoid damage
causing from air humidity.
Once again: No warranty at all!
But some people verified that the above worked for them... so have fun
:)
Cheers
Gerd
