Netscape 4.8/Redhat 5.2 just hangs very often

Hi,

I am running Netscape 4.8/Redhat 5.2.

For some reason when i try to view some web-pages, netscape completely
hangs.
Even the stop buttons dont work anymore and i can not close the program,
only
by killing the process!!

I have the feeling it has something to do with Java stuff that is
loading when i enter
some webpages.

Anyone else recognizes this problem and hopefully someone knows a
solution
because its very annoying!

Thanks!

Here's the solution for you: Go to netscape's www-site, there is a page
which tells you with which shared libraries was netscape compiled.
Upgrading to the same versions helps a lot with these hangs (I can't
remember when was the last time my netscape hung :-)

upgrading or downgrading? I have the latest libraries on my computer. If i
change
them back to older ones, i prolly run into trouble with other applications
again. Sounds like a 'chicken or egg' problem :-)

Best and cleanest thing would be to recompile with my own libraries then.
I think the source code was available, but maybe only to a selected group
of people?
I also dont know where to find it.

Download the 4.5 version. It's more stable.

Only the Netscape code is available, not all the parts they "borrowed". In
any case, you might want to check out www.mozilla.org. They've build it to
be a usuable browser again, but nowhere near the official Netscape browser
yet.

Well, it might be downgrading then. But remember that if you are using Red
Hat you should consider recompiling those libraries from the original
packages anyway, even though you are using the "same" version - Red Hat
tends to make their own modifications to about everything so you can't
expect any of the libraries that come with RH to be "standard".

That would be the best solution, but I don't have a clue about where to
find the sources..

And has some javascript security holes which allow a web server maintainer
to brewse your harddisk. 4.08 does not have this hole.

Just realized that the downloaded netscapes are all statically linked together,
so no use to change any libraries whatsoever.

I found them. They are located on the mozilla.org side. Who knows i get so
pissed some day that i will download them, compile them and debug it until it
happens again :-)

Really? The ones I have, which were downloaded a few months ago, are
all dynamically linked. I would be very happy if it weren't
dynamically linked, or at least if the only dynamic library were libc.

>> > Best and cleanest thing would be to recompile with my own libraries then.

Don't do it! Actually, in general it's a good idea, but it will
probably make Netscape crash. As far as I can tell, the glibc
Netscape is particularly finicky about having preciesly the libraries
that Redhat supplies (I think the culprit in my case is libstdc++). I
haven't been able to get it to work using my self-compiled libraries.
On of these days I'll get alien and download Redhat's RPM's for
libstdc++ and see if that lets me run Netscape. Right now I use a
libc5 version and have my old libc5 X11 libraries hidden off somewhere.
At least if you try to compile the libraries, make sure to keep the
old ones around.

Yes really. I ran 'ldd netscape' which confirmed me on that one.

Yes, i also read something about that. For the moment i am not planning on
re-compiling Netscape also because i read on mozilla.org, that the only
code available is unstable after all. U can only download the version they
are actually developing on, with all the risks involved. It might even not
compile! So i won't give it a shot, or i must get really pissed by this freeze! :-)
