How to configure Lilo to boot to Windows
#109

Hello All,

 I am planning on installing Linux Red Hat 5.2 to a 2 gig partition on
my HDD shortly. It will be sharing the disk with Win 95A.

 My question involves the boot up process : I want Lilo to do one of 2
things :

   1. Boot by default to Win 95 or :
   2. Boot from a floppy disk to Linux

 Can anybody give me a walk through of the steps involved in this? I
understand that I can set this up on installation.

                     Thanks in advance,

                                Andrew Strong.

If you want to boot Linux from floppy then you don't need lilo. I have
Debian linux and boot into that by virtue of putting the boot floppy in when
I turn the PC on. Otherwise it just boots Windows as usual.

It was a long time ago that I installed it but I believe it was an option on
the install that I boot from floppy.

Assuming things haven't changed too radically under RedHat 5.2 since 5.1,
at the LILO installation step you should have two partitions listed:
"linux"
and "dos". "linux" ia usually the default (marked with an asterisk).
To make Windows the default use the Edit option; highlight "dos" and press
the appropriate function key (F4?) You can also rename "dos" to "win95"
etc.
here to make it more meaningful. Accept the changes, and continue the
installation. Assuming all goes well, at your next reboot you should get
the "LILO:" prompt. If you press enter or wait for a few seconds, it will
boot to Windows; if you type "linux", it will boot to Linux.

If you use a floppy disk to boot to Linux, you don't need LILO.

As an alternative you may wish to consider loadin. This is just a dos
utility which will boot linux. You can either configure it up so you
need just press F4 during boot to get to linux, or by using the DOS
menu's in your autoexec.bat. This also allows you to reboot to linux at
any time by just calling loadlin with the right parametres.

***My Config.sys***
[MENU]
MENUITEM=Linux, Linux 2.0.34
MENUITEM=Linux2, Alternate Kernal (test)
MENUITEM=Windoze, WINDOZE... put on your seatbelt!
MENUDEFAULT=Linux,10

[Linux]

[Linux2]

[Windoze]
***EOF***

***Autoexec.bat***
goto %CONFIG%

:Linux
 c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\zImage root=/dev/hda3 ro

:Linux2
 c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\zTest root=/dev/hda3 ro

:Windoze
***EOF***
        Good luck with it, and enjoy!

                                        Brod.
