In Redhat 4.1, (and later--we also have a RH5.x server coming online in
a couple of months), how can I increase the time delay for unsuccessful
login attempts?

For example, when entering a valid username and an invalid password, I
would like a delay of 10-15 seconds before the system gives the next
login: prompt.

Thanks.

If you have the shadow suite installed (If you don't, you can get it from
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/admin/shadow971215.tar.gz) you can
set this in /etc/login.defs, eg:

#
# Delay in seconds before being allowed another attempt after a login failure
#
FAIL_DELAY 3

Just change that to 10 or 15 or whatever.
