timeout sending Config-Requests (GNOME dialer): how to correct?

  I am using Linux (Red Hat 6.1). Whilst I can dial-in to my
ISP with the (KDE) Kdialer, I am unable to do so with the GNOME
dialer applet. I created my user account, and as root, I attempt to
connect to sympatico. The modem connects and completes the
handshake, then I lose the connection.

Device: 3Com/USR 56k/v.90 Voice Modem Pro, external (serial, Com2
/ttyS1)

  ... from my messages file:
 ==============================
Jan 2 00:24:58 localhost kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling)
Jan 2 00:24:58 localhost kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
Jan 2 00:24:58 localhost kernel: registered device ppp0
Jan  2 00:24:58 localhost pppd[793]: pppd 2.3.10 started by root, uid 0
Jan  2 00:24:58 localhost pppd[793]: Using interface ppp0
Jan  2 00:24:58 localhost pppd[793]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Jan 2 00:25:28 localhost pppd[793]: LCP: timeout sending
Config-Requests
Jan  2 00:25:28 localhost pppd[793]: Connection terminated.
Jan  2 00:25:28 localhost pppd[793]: Exit.

 ================================

 How can I correct this timeout? I seem to remember that
disabling the lock file in the kdialer prevented timeouts, but
in GNOME I have no idea what to do. ... or could this be a problem
*originating* from sympatico (my ISP)?

 I am still in the early learning stages, and do most of
my configuration via the GUI (linuxconf, etc.). As I am not a
regular member of this list, kindly respond via private email.

 Thanks in advance
