XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files

Since RH 7.2, the XFconfig stuff has changed quite a bit. Is there
any information about how the XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files are
used? There seems to be lot of uncommented stuff in there that isn't
being used, and what does appear to be happening doesn't appear (at
least very accurately) in these files.

I'm referring to the likes of this:

# --- 1024x768 ---
# 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, 48.4 kHz hsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 65 1024 1032 1176 1344
                                 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
# 1024x768 @ 70 Hz, 56.5 kHz hsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 75 1024 1048 1184 1328
                                 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
# 1024x768 @ 76 Hz, 62.5 kHz hsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 85 1024 1032 1152 1360
                                 768 784 787 823
# 1024x768 @ 85 Hz, 70.24 kHz hsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 98.9 1024 1056 1216 1408
                                768 782 788 822 -HSync -VSync
# 1024x768 @ 100Hz, 80.21 kHz hsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 115.5 1024 1056 1248 1440
                                 768 771 781 802 -HSync -VSync

At this resolution, my hardware says it's 60Khz by 75Hz which is
pretty close to the middle one. I'm interested in finding out what to
adjust so that it uses a different Modeline. What indicates which one
is in use? Nothing that I can see. The config files also refer to a
number of resolutions that aren't being used also.

The current XFree86-Video-Timings-HOW-TO begins by saying it is now
redundant. There is reference to dot clocks which I gather has a
maximum, but a slower rate can be used.

Ideas gratefully accepted.

thats correct the modelines if they exist are unused

check /var/log/Xfree86.0.log (or something similar) and go through it
to find out what resoloutions are been used

looks like this

(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x1024": 108.0 MHz, 64.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1024x768": 75.0 MHz, 56.5 kHz, 70.1 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "640x480": 54.0 MHz, 60.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz (D)

Don't hold me to this but , I remember reading ( I think in the
Font HOWTO FDU ) that the new rewrite version of Xfree
which INCLUDES font support and no longer uses xfs,
now uses the XF86Config-4 file and the other file is included only for older
apps compatability.
