G'day

I have been trying to get a Samba file server started over our local
network. We operate on share level access and run both TCP\IP and
IPX\SPX through the lan cards in Windoze ME and 95 on the faster and
slower machine respectively.
I am installing Linux (Red Hat 6.0) on the slower one (a K6 PII-233 w\
64 M RAM) the LAN card is an HP Lan Plus (or similar)
I can access the internet through the network (using Windoze ME as the
'proxy' server (Wingate 2.0) no problems but Samba doesn't work at
all.

When I say not working at all the service starts but will not permit
the windoze ME machine to read the linux drive on the Red Hat machine.
I can mount the INTERNAL windoze drive on the windoze 95 machine from
itself however.
Is it possible to share the contents of the linux drive with the
Windoze ME machine? If so any tips how???
or only the mounted windows drive within the linux machine?

Also when using linuxconf to try and configure Samba something went
pear-shaped and the result is a samba.conf file full of wierd
characters and more than 200 errors when i ran testparm over it!
Obviously this has some bearing on why Samba isn't working BUT before
the config file went down that famous creek Samba wouldn't work
Finally could someone post me their samba.conf file via email?
I can receive it on the linux machine and replace my stuffed one with
it
the email address for the above is twoflippers@icqmail.com

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
David

Hi,
  at first, can you ping your linux in winME and ping your winME in
your linux?
  seconde, do you have setup the smb.conf ?
    workgroup = mygroup
  mygroup is same as winME 's workgroup.
    encrypt password = yes

   Ok .

ensure that all the Samba rpms are installed properly

rpm -q samba
rpm -q samba-common
rpm -q samba-server

edit the file /etc/samba/smb.conf under the following lines

workgroup = {what ever your workgroup is}
password level = 50
username level = 50
encrypted passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

and add the following line in [global] section

include = %m.encrypt

Now you should be up and running

type setup and make sure that the process smb is starting when machine is
switched on.

To check if samba is running use command 'samba status', if running restart
it with command 'samba restart' if not 'samba start'

Now you need to go into users under linuxconf and make sure that each user
is included with the exact name that they log into windoze box with

You now need to re open console display and issue

smbpasswd -a {username}

for each user in turn, the first time you issue this command it will tell
you the file is missing before recreating it for you.

If you have any problems let me know, it is actually quite simple!!
