/dev/lp[0-2] not showing up

Hi,

I've been trying to get my printer happening, but for some reason
/dev/lp* is not registering with the system. When I first installed
RH5.2 it worked, but since I've played with the kernel it's disappeared.
In the kernel builds I've included parallel port options.

Any ideas?

Ta',

Did you include support for _both_ parallel port and parallel printer
support? It's under General Setup. You should also enable "PC-style
hardware" which will appear when you select "Parallel port support".

You may also find that you need to delete your printer and re-create the
config for it. Mine used to be on lp1 but now it's on lp0 since I upgraded
to RH6. If you're on Red Hat the easiest way to do this is to use printtool.

I'm pretty sure I've included all of this.

I found that I needed to add the necessary modprobe's into
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules as the entries in /etc/conf.modules didn't seem
to work.

my rc.modules says:

..
modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc io=0x278 irq=auto
modprobe parport_probe
modprobe lp

Note that your io= setting may be different depending on which printer
port your printer is connected to.

I should try executing the modprobes from a root shell with your
printer switched on and then have a look in /proc/parport - if all is
well you should have a directory /proc/parport/0 containing files:
autoprobe  devices  hardware  irq

If your printer supports IEEE1284, autoprobe should contain something
like:

CLASS:PRINTER;
MODEL:EPL-5700;
MANUFACTURER:EPSON;
COMMAND SET:PJL,EJL,ESCPL2-00,ESCP9-84,...
