PPP and kernel 2.2.2 - problems
#91

I've just installed the new 2.2.2 kernel on top of RedHat 5.2 (2.0.36-3
kernel RPMs) using the 2.2.2 kernel source tarball and the 2.2 support RPMs
(modutils etc.) from the RedHat FTP site. The new kernel is working fine
*except* for PPP.

I'm using pppd 2.0.35 (5.2 RPM), and have PPP compiled into the kernel.
Following some messages I found on Dejanews, I have added the
ppp-compress-xx aliases to conf.modules to take care of the "module not
found" messages, but it still complains about the "ppp0" module.

After dialing in to the server, performance is poor - transfers seems
to occur in short bursts instead of a stream. Sessions are terminated
after a few minutes by a purported SIGHUP signal - there is no sign of
impending doom prior to this. :) (This occurred infrequently under
5.2 - very annoying.) tcpdump has not shown up any obvious problems
like nack packets, but I haven't gone too deeply into this.

Has anyone managed to successfully get a working PPP configuration
under the 2.0.xx kernels to work correctly with 2.2.x?

Thanks in advance.

Paul,

PPPd under 2.2.2 is the same as under 2.0.x, except you need 2.3.5 pppd
as a minimum (I suspect that what you have, its RH5.2 standard. If not
then you need to upgrade pppd). There are several things you should look
at: enable debug on your ppp setup and have a look at the logs, you
may need irqtune to tune your interrupts on your serial card (assuming
its a problem servicing interrupts), and double check that the new setup
hasn't put a option you don't need in your config..... like its trying to
do DNS lookups incorrectly (ie: make sure you have your /etc/resolv.conf
file set correctly). Its debugging time, but rest assured, 2.2.2 and
pppd do work well.

Cheers, Grahame

ppp working fine under kernel 2.2.2 here, only difference is that I
compiled it as a module instead of into the kernel. I do have one error
notice that pops up, the ppp connection works fine as long as I just
dial into my ISP, but once I right-click on a file to download, I
receive an error of "execv /usr/sbin/in.identd: No such file or
directory". This error only occurs once, then does not appear again
until I shut down my computer, restart it, make another ppp connection,
and again right-click on a file to download it. I can download many
files and only receive the error once.

I do have all of the updates from Redhats kernel-2.2 directory
installed, and have had no other problems with kenel 2.2.2.

Update pppd - it should be around 2.2.3 or thereabouts.

Sorry, that should have been ppd 2.3.5, not 2.0.35 (mixed up with the
2.0.xx kernel version.)

Actually the 5.2 RPM is 2.3.5, which is OK. Looks like a typo.

Correct.

BTW, Be prepared to update a couple of other utils like xosview and
such (if you use them, it's not essential) - mine broke but luckily I
found a diff on c.o.l.development.system to fix it. Grab one of Alan Cox's
- - -ac patches too (ac7 at time of writing, ac5 used here) as it fixes a number
of things.

Thanks, that fixed the problem.
