OK lets try. In X-Windows you can chose (by default) between four color depth. 8,16,24,32 bits per pixel (bpp). In each color depth your combination of video card and monitor can give you number of resolutions which can be chosen by <Ctr+Alt+Num+/->. But the display is the highest HorxVer number of pixels at this color depth and you see on screen only part of it. For example: the hardware ability is 1600x1200 and you chose to display 800x600 you see quarter of display on screen. You can instruct your box to go into any color depth by invoking X-Windows with "startx -- -bppN" where N = 8,16,24,32. Now for the HARD part. Stop beying a "Newbie"! RTFM "man XF86CONFIG" and you will find there info how to instruct your display to behave to YOUR preferences. This IS Linux, your imagination is the limit.
