This may sound silly, but some of my friends can't work it out either.

Whenever I use rpm to install something, it never installs, for example:

[root@localhost davluong]# rpm -ivh gtk+-1.2.8-1.src.rpm
warning: user otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: group otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: user otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: group otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: user otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: group otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: user otaylor does not exist - using root
warning: group otaylor does not exist - using root
   1:gtk+ ###########################################
[100%]
[root@localhost davluong]# rpm -ql gtk+-1.2.8-1.src.rpm
package gtk+-1.2.8-1.src.rpm is not installed

This occurs with all rpm's.. So what I've had to do is use alien to convert
it to slackware tgz format and manually make then make install it.

What am I doing wrong.
Appreciate all your help.

David

When querying a package installation, don't use the file name, rather
use the package name. This applies to binary rpms. Source rpms, as you
installed one, cannot be queried. After having installed a source rpm,
the sources are usually to be found in /usr/src/...

Hi,

You're installing a source RPM. It probably ended up in /usr/src somewhere.
Now you have to compile it, probably using the standard ./configure, make,
make install process.

That line of # marks indicates that it did install correctly, but the files
are all owned by root because there was some problem assigning ownerships
to otaylor.

AFAIK you can't query on source rpms, only installed binaries.
