NeWSprint 2.1 Software
----------------------
Every NeWSprinter 20 and SPARCprinter(TM) laser printer ships with the
latest version of NeWSprint software, NeWSprint 2.1. NeWSprint
software provides an extensive selection of hinted outline fonts that
remain consistent from screen to printer, at any size or resolution.
The result is crisp text, sharp graphics, and high quality -- even with
the most complex text and graphics. NeWSprint software also prints
Type 1 fonts quickly and easily, allowing Macintosh(R) and PC networks
access to the power of Network Printing.
This innovative software performs all file rasterization on the SPARC
system, utilizing the powerful, shared CPU, memory, and disk storage
available on the network. With its OpenWindows(TM) printing tool,
PostScript(R), ASCII, Sun Raster, troff, and TIFF file support, and
built-in raster bypass printing mode, NeWSprint software can handle all

target markets include many current commercial and technical markets with
heavy printing or ledger size printing requirements, such as:
- Legal
- Finance

- Electronic & Technical Publishing
- Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE)
- CAD / CAM / CAE / EDA
- GIS / LIS / Facilities Management
- Electronic Document/Drawing Management Systems (EDMS)

- Standard High Speed Office Printing Applications
SPARCprinter Positioning
------------------------
NeWSprinter 20 joins the Sun printer family alongside the popular 12
PPM SPARCprinter laser printer, which continues to lead its class in
network page printers. The SPARCprinter laser printer remains a great
price/performance leader for small workgroups (2 to 8 users) and for
personal convenience printing. The table below summarizes the key
differences between the NeWSprinter 20 and the SPARCprinter laser
printer:
Feature NeWSprinter 20 SPARCprinter

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS
----------------------------------
NeWSprinter 20 works only on SPARC systems with SBus (SPARCstation IPC,
SPARCstation IPX, SPARCstation 1, SPARCstation 1+, SPARCstation 2,
SPARCstation 10, SPARCserver(TM) 630MP, SPARCserver 670MP and
SPARCserver 690MP) running any of the Solaris 1.x operating systems.
NeWSprint 2.1 software is based on OpenWindows Version 3. Users can
also take advantage of terminal-based installation and operation.
NeWSprint software utilizes between 6.5 MB and 21.5 MB of disk space
depending on the choice of software modules. For adequate spooling and
page image storage with NeWSprinter 20, an additional 8 MB of disk
space is also required. NeWSprint requires a minimum of 12 MB of RAM
and double that in swap space. A SunCD(TM) drive is required to
install the NeWSprint software.
Note: During NeWSprinter 20 installation, your customer will need to call
1-800-USA-4-SUN to obtain their NeWSprint software password.
One License Required Per Printer
--------------------------------
A NeWSprint license is required for EACH printer you attach and use
with NeWSprint software, but not every workstation. This is enforced
with a password keyed off the hostid. Users are instructed how to get
passwords as part of the installation procedure. Once a printer is
licensed, the license cannot be transferred to another printer without
authorization from Sun.
**Solaris 2.1 or later Compatibility
------------------------------------
The Solaris 2.1 or later operating system release is not yet supported
by NeWSprint software or NeWSprinter 20; however, any computer on the
network, including any Solaris 2.1 or later based system, can send
PostScript or UNIX(R) print jobs to the SPARCstation system to which
NeWSprinter 20 is attached.
To help make this clearer, the following chart shows these
relationships (where "local" means the printer is attached directly,
and "remote" means the printer is on another system):
System Solaris Version NeWSprint Support
------ ------------- -----------------
SPARCclassic(TM) system Solaris 2.1 or later Remote ONLY
SPARCstation LX(TM) system Solaris 2.1 or later Remote ONLY
SPARCstation 10 Solaris 1.x Local OR Remote
Solaris 2.1 or later Remote ONLY
ALL Sun4c Systems Solaris 1.x Local OR Remote
Solaris 2.1 or later Remote ONLY
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Please see the section entitled:
"Special Software Upgrade: NeWSprint 2.5 for Solaris 2.1 or later"
The SBus card shipped with NeWSprinter 20 is *NOT* the same as the
the SPARCprinter/X1130A SBus card. You CANNOT interchange the two.

Version 2.0 release.

Sales Order Line Item Disc.Cat. Description
--------------------- --------- -----------
NPT-2.5S N/C NeWSprint 2.5 Special Upgrade
Q: Which printing products qualify for this free upgrade?
A: These products qualify for the special NeWSprint 2.5 upgrade offer:
Product Description Sales Order Line Item
------------------- ---------------------
NeWSprinter 20 NPRN-20
SPARCprinter SPRN-400
NeWSprint 2.1 NPT-2.1-4-4-21 (when separately purchased)
Q: Does the NeWSprinter 20 replace the SPARCprinter laser printer?
Where does NeWSprinter 20 fit in the product line?
A: No, NeWSprinter 20 will not replace SPARCprinter laser printer.
NeWSprinter 20 is the newest member of the Sun printing family.
NeWSprinter 20's large-format printing, higher speed and duty cycle
are designed specifically to meet the needs of larger workgroups of 5-20
users. SPARCprinter will continue to be sold as the solution for smaller
workgroups (2-8 users) or personal printing applications that require
only A/A4 printing at a lower duty cycle.
NeWSprinter 20's B/A3 format is perfect for the majority of Sun technical
applications such as CAD/CAM/CAE, or for desktop and electronic
publishing where "tabloid" paper sizes are a must.
Q: The SPARCprinter laser printer has worked well when attached to user
SPARCstation systems where customers also run desktop applications. What
about NeWSprinter 20?
A: This depends on the SPARCstation model, configuration and user work load.
For SPARCstation 10s, you should feel comfortable placing a NeWSprinter 20
directly on a user's workstation in most situations.
For other SPARCstation systems, you should be aware that NeWSprinter 20's
high speed and memory requirements may compromise the user's desktop
application performance. Therefore, be sure to carefully evaluate
customer expectations, desktop workload, configuration, and estimated
printing loads before making an attachment recommendation. When in
doubt, recommend a print server attachment for the NeWSprinter 20.
----
Q: I know that the NeWSprinter 20 SBus card is NOT the same one used with the
SPARCprinter laser printer. Will they conflict if being used in the same
print server?
A: No, both SBus cards are single-slot devices that have been designed and
tested to work together and drive printers simultaneously. However, if
your customer is using an existing printer driven off the parallel port
on a SPARCprinter SBus card (or the X1130A option), they must still install
NeWSprinter 20's SBus card.
