SMCC now expands its industry leading server product line with a new
low-cost data center package that incorporates the latest high
performance SCSI-2 disk technology. The new 10MB/sec 2.1GB differential
SCSI-2 disk provides better SCSI disk throughput and increased capacity
for Sun MP servers. In addition, Sun is also offering new aggressive
pricing for existing 670MP and 690MP packages. As always, the latest
disk technology is also available as add-on options for existing
systems and in expansion pedestals/cabinets.
With over 7800 systems installed, the SPARCserver 600MP series has
taken the top spot for volume in the UNIX MP server market in less than
one year since announcement. Sun's expanded family of 600MP servers
continues to provide customers the best value in network resources with
an unmatched combination of application throughput, growth path and
innovation.
What's New -
Applications Throughput:
- Faster SCSI disk throughput with new 2.1GB drives providing
25% better sequential I/O throughput per disk
- More I/O operations per SCSI controller as 10MB/sec adaptor
supports more disk per string. Saves on SBus slots too.
Growth:
- Higher maximum capacity for the data center with disk storage
to over 100GB on future Solaris 2.X releases
- More storage for the office environment with disk capacities
of up to 41GB for SPARCserver 630MP, 670MP and SPARCserver 10
- Easy system enhancement for installed-base with add-on options
that mix and match in existing cabinets with 1.3GB SCSI or IPI disks

Offering a new cost-effective entry price for Sun's data center
cabinet, the new SPARCserver 690MP packages provide an ideal single
footprint system supporting up to 25GB internal disk storage, four way
multiprocessing, up to 1GB memory and 25GB unattended backup capacity.
Two package configurations are available for easy orderability:
P71 Packages: 64MB memory, 2 x 2.1GB differential SCSI-2 disk,
DSBE/S adapter and internal SunCD
available with: model 120 and model 41
P73 Packages: 64MB or 128MB memory, 4 x 2.1GB differential SCSI-2 disk,
DSBE/S adapter, internal SunCD and internal 5GB 8mm Tape drive

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS
------------------------------------
- New 2.1GB differential SCSI-2 disk and DSBE/S require Solaris 1.1
or later.
- CONFIGURATION LIMITATION: Solaris 1.1 will only support up to 24
of the new 2.1GB disks for the 690MP. That is four full trays with
four host adapters. Trays can be located in system cabinet (two maximum)
or in an expansion cabinet.
- Future releases of Solaris 2.X are required to expand support beyond 24 of
the 2.1GB disk for the SPARCserver 690MP. Attachment of the additional
DSBE/S adapters is accommodated by adding SBus Expansion Subsystem Boards.
Up to 8 DSBE/S adapters and 48 2.1GB disks can be supported with future
Solaris 2.X releases.
- CONFIGURATION LIMITATION: A maximum of two expansion pedestals or
16 of the new 2.1GB differential SCSI-2 disks will be supported by
SPARCserver 630MP, 670MP or SPARCserver 10 with either Solaris 1.1 or
2.X
REPRICING MATRIX FOR EXISTING SPARCserver 670MP AND 690MP

All packages and models of SPARCserver 670MP and 690MP have been reduced in
price by US $ 10,000. In addition, 128MB memory configurations of SPARCserver
670MP include an additional discount for bundled memory.
