The Florida SunFlash
SMCC AND UNIVERSAL SOFTWARE GIVE SYSTEM/36
USERS MIGRATION PATH TO OPEN SYSTEMS
SunFLASH Vol 46 #x October 1992
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -October 27, 1992 - Sun Microsystems Computer
Corporation (SMCC) and Universal Software announced today that
Universal's Open/36 product is being ported to SMCC's SPARC
(R)/Solaris(R) platform. Open/36 enables IBM System/36 users to move
their applications, without recompilation, from the proprietary
System/36 environment to Sun(TM) SPARCserver(TM) and SPARCstation(TM)
systems.
The Open/36 product gives System/36 users a complete System/36
environment on a Sun system that includes all their familiar tools. By
moving to the open SPARC/Solaris distributed computing environment,
users will now be able to access their applications and data anywhere
throughout the enterprise. In addition to running their current
applications, users can modify them and develop new ones. Current Sun
customers who are also System/36 users can integrate their System/36
applications and still have all of their work seamlessly accessible.
With an installed base of 250,000, IBM's proprietary System/36 had been
a staple of that company's midrange product line for several years.
System/36 is nearing its end of life, prompting users to seek more open
and cost-effective alternatives to proprietary AS/400 systems, IBM's
suggested replacement.
"Future support and migration options for System/36 users have been
limited," said Alberto Saavedra, vice president of marketing for
Universal Software. "These users have increasingly been looking for a
migration path to a more flexible, robust environment. Open/36 on Sun
systems allows them to preserve their existing applications, as well as
extend those applications and create new ones."
Many System/36 applications have been developed for the commercial
market, including manufacturing, distribution and retail, areas where
UNIX(R) client-server systems are quickly making inroads. Universal
Software developed Open/36 because of the growing market demand for
open systems and SMCC's strong presence in this area.
"SMCC offers the product line breadth in multiprocessing servers that
allows customers to upgrade their systems as their business needs
evolve," said Nancy Colwell, director of commercial tools and
technologies for SMCC. "SPARCservers combined with Open/36 give
customers the ability to bring their applications into existing
computing environments, including PCs, terminals, mainframes,
workstations or servers."
Open/36 is being ported to the SMCC platform now and will be available
beginning early 1993 from Universal Software.
Universal Software based in Los Angeles is a wholly-owned subsidiary of
ACOM Computers of Montreal, Canada. ACOM was founded in 1976 and is a
leading supplier of software for the hospitality industry. Universal
Software was formed in 1990 to sell Open RS/36 worldwide. Universal
Software offers the most complete and effortless migration solutions
for IBM System/36 users.
