A student dies for a pop: http://www.montrealgazette.com/PAGES/981214/2101672.html Student dies under soft-drink machine RENE BRUEMMER Freelance A 19-year-old student was found dead under an overturned soft-drink vending machine yesterday in his residence at Bishop's University. Kevin Mackle, a first-year business student from Etobicoke, Ont., was found by another student around 9:45 a.m. in the ground-floor lobby of the Kuehner Hall residence. Students reported Mackle left a friend's room around 4 a.m. and speculated he was trying to shake a drink from the machine when it toppled. Residence assistants - under the guidance of the university's counselor, chaplain and nurses - were contacting students remaining in residence and offering counseling. Bishop's has about 530 residence beds. Several students have already left for the holiday break and some said Mackle had been planning to leave yesterday morning. Bruce Stevenson, public-relations director for the university, said most soft-drink machines at the university are bolted to the wall, but the one in Mackle's residence was not because it was in a tight alcove and considered too difficult to move. Stevenson said he has read about at least three other people who have been killed in a similar manner. The machines weigh several hundred pounds and are top heavy. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission found that between 1978 and 1995, at least 37 deaths and 113 injuries resulted from falling vending machines in the U.S., according to an Associated Press report. Three years ago, seven American manufacturers of soda machines mounted a warning-label campaign to alert customers to the dangers. One says: "Warning! Never rock or tilt. Machine can fall over and cause serious injury or death." ______________________________________________________________________ I wish you a happy christmas at: http://www.radiotelephone.net/merry_christmas/ M a s a t a k a N o d a, Montral, Qubec, Canada.
